On the day, Eric Garcia, Adrian Bernabe, Yeboah Amankwah, Ben Knight, Henri Ogunby and Keke Simmonds talked to the students about their favourite books and helped them write about theirs.
The players also took part in a read aloud session, where they read excerpts from their chosen books to the class.
World Book Day is the world’s biggest campaign to provide every child and young person in the country with a book of their own. Support of this initiative forms part of City in the Community’s wider City Stars Literacy project which is currently being delivered in primary schools across the city.
Created over two years ago, with the support of Etihad Airways, the project has been designed to build children’s confidence in reading, writing and spoken language using examples from the world of football.
This is particularly important in Manchester where, according to the National Literacy Trust, children and young people spend less time reading a book than the national average.
During the six-week project, youngsters are encouraged to write match reports for the City in the Community Gazette, use descriptive words in their City commentary sessions and use evaluative writing to create scouting reports.
