Nathan Ake plays for the first time since Boxing Day as Pep Guardiola makes seven changes for today’s game Premier League game against Leeds United.

The Dutch defender makes his long-awaited return from a muscular injury and is joined by Raheem Sterling who is back in the starting XI after a two-game absence.

Benjamin Mendy, Fernandinho, Oleksandr Zinchenko, Ferran Torres and Gabriel Jesus are also recalled as Guardiola makes widespread changes during this busy period.

Ederson, Joao Cancelo, John Stones and Bernardo Silva complete the line-up, with all four retained from the midweek win over Borussia Dortmund.

“I hope we are prepared to compete. We are four games away and tomorrow is a big step. The players know from the first game how difficult it was and tomorrow will not be an exception.

“It’s a challenge. We are so close - we need three wins and one draw - and when you play at home it is an opportunity.

“I admire a lot of things they [Leeds] do, especially how they behave on the pitch. It doesn’t matter the opposition or competition. They demand you do things you are not used to.”

Form Guide

City’s scintillating form continued in midweek, with Phil Foden’s later winner enough to edge out Borussia Dortmund 2-1 in the first leg of our Champions League quarter-final.

In the process, it extended our unprecedented run of 27 victories in our last 28 matches, and another triumph would move us 17 points clear at the Premier League summit for 24 hours at least.

Nonetheless, Leeds also come into the game brimming with confidence, with consecutive 2-1 wins over Fulham and Sheffield United respectively rekindling faint hopes of a push for Europe.

Last meeting

City and Leeds played out a thoroughly entertaining 1-1 draw under the Elland Road lights in October’s reverse fixture.

Raheem Sterling gave us a deserved early lead, firing a devastating low drive into the bottom corner of Ilan Meslier’s net after jinking his way through a couple of challenges.

But the hosts rallied after half-time, and were back on level terms when Rodrigo stabbed home from a corner after City failed to clear their lines.

The point left Pep Guardiola’s men 11th in the table, with one win, one draw and one defeat from our opening three games of the season.

Significantly, this was Ruben Dias’ first match in a City shirt, with the Portuguese centre-half demonstrating the kind of defensive qualities we have now become accustomed to in an impressive debut display.
