Kyle Walker says City must treat every game from now until the end of the season as a cup final as the season approaches its most defining stage.

The England full-back played a key role in helping Pep Guardiola’s side record a dominant 4-1 derby win over Manchester United on Sunday.

Victory at the weekend moved reigning champions City six points clear of Liverpool at the top of the Premier League – although the Anfield side do have a game in hand.

And as he both reflected on a hugely impressive display and looked ahead to the rest of the campaign, Walker spelled out the realities if City are to secure what would be a fourth title in five years.

“I think every game from now until the end of the season is a cup final,” declared the England international.

“We need to make sure we bring the same level of performance to every single game and hopefully that will be enough for us to clinch the Premier League.

“I think this season especially (a derby win feels extra special). We have found it difficult when they have come here in recent years. They have turned us over.

“We could have won the title one season and Pogba scored a late goal, so I think we owed them one and we did it in style. It is an important victory.

“(So) Sunday is a great one for the bragging rights, but the season is not over by any stretch of the imagination.

“We know we need to keep getting the three points and keep putting the performances in.

“We are not a finished article and this isn’t over.

“It is a great result and three points, we have ticked that off and it is a local derby, but there is still a lot of football to play.”

With Liverpool also on a formidable run of form, despite Sunday’s fine result there is precious little margin for error as the business end of the season looms into view.

However, Walker says he thrives on the pressure such demands bring and he believes the fact every game now carries such high stakes also helps inspire the absolute best out of Pep Guardiola’s side.

“We have to keep it going if we want to meet our goals and objectives at the end of the season,” the right-back added.

“I watched Liverpool (on Saturday) and they are a fantastic team with key men in very good areas.

“We just have to make sure that we do what we have to do and hopefully that will be enough.

“It is football, I love playing under pressure and I feel like that is when we produce our best football when our backs are against the ropes and we have got people breathing down our necks.

“It is exciting, it is good for the English game and it is what the fans pay a lot of good money to come and see.”
