Ruben Dias headed us in front on Tyneside with just five minutes gone before a stunning solo goal from Joao Cancelo doubled our advantage before the half-time break.
Riyad Mahrez scored our third and his 50th goal for City, despite initially being flagged for offside, before Raheem Sterling netted from close range to round off a great afternoon for Guardiola‘s men against the Toon.
City dominated proceedings in the Midlands, but couldn’t find the breakthrough before the half-time whistle.
However, Bernardo fired home from a tight angle just after the hour mark, and that would prove enough for the defending champions to seal a vital three points.
pep preview
Pep Guardiola says he will assess his squad after Thursday’s afternoon training session and the next round of PCR tests.
The players returned after a couple of days’ rest ahead of the busy festive schedule, with matches against Leicester City, Brentford and Arsenal inside a week, but the City boss says it is too soon to say who is available and who isn’t.
“We had two days off,” said Pep.
“Now we start training this afternoon and we will see. Every day we do tests. Maybe they arrive positive, or backroom staff.
“I cannot answer you now, but hopefully as much as possible we are ready for the game on Sunday.”
Leicester City team news
Both Ricardo Pereira and Çağlar Söyüncü were forced off during the Carabao Cup quarter-final against Liverpool on Wednesday.
Manager Brendan Rodgers said: “We’ll have to wait and see. We had a few guys come off this evening, Vardy wasn’t great (fitness-wise) in the game either.
“In the last half-hour, his hamstring was tight. Söyüncü has a tight hamstring again, so we’re going to have to just see how we are over the next few days.”
