City begin our defence of the Carabao Cup at home on Thursday 24 September, with kick-off at 19:45 (UK).

Team news

Sergio Aguero (knee) and Ilkay Gundogan (COVID-19) will both miss the game, whilst it remains to be seen whether Aymeric Laporte will be fit enough after recovering from the virus.

Bernardo Silva, Oleksandr Zinchenko (both muscular) and Joao Cancelo (foot)  will also be unavailable, though Pep Guardiola suggested Eric Garcia (head) may have a better chance of recovering in time.

“Against Bournemouth we will play mostly players in the academy and try to keep energy for the Premier League.

“With the lack of preparation and seven players out, we have to keep the players who played today as fresh as possible.

“We will see how the players recover. We won the Carabao Cup three times and we want to win again but we will have to see. It is what it is. We have to adapt.”

Last meeting

City beat a struggling Bournemouth side 2-1 at the Etihad Stadium in the closing stages of last season.

David Silva scored a brilliant free-kick and Gabriel Jesus was also on target before David Brooks pulled one back late on in a game in which the visitors were left ruing several missed chances.

City: It’s so far so good for City, who boast a 100% record after winning 3-1 against Wolves in our opening game of the season.

Bournemouth: The Cherries are two games into their league campaign and beat Blackburn Rovers 3-2 after their opening day 1-1 draw with Middlesbrough.

They reached the third round having got the better of Crystal Palace in a penalty shootout. Following a 0-0 draw, the Championship outfit prevailed 11-10 in the shootout.
